Japanese Teachers
Visit Camp Meeker
After a tour of Washington D.C. and S.F., five elementary school
teachers from Hiroshima, Japan, came to our area for a five day visit. Why? I was nominated for and awarded
a Fulbright Fellowship to Japan. I will be joined
by my colleage Jim McElroy who also teaches at Tomales Elementary School. This is a Master Teacher Program that
is based on connecting
students internationally through science and technology.
As a part of this “teaching
exchange,” the Japanese came to visit our school and meet our students; and
in return, we will spend 6 weeks this summer getting to know Japanese culture
and their schools in Hiroshima (a city dedicated to the undersatanding of
peace).
The Japanese visitors loved our area and commented over and
over “this is paradise” when visiting our home in Camp Meeker. They were very interested in our local history and even
enjoyed a tour of Saint Dorothy’s Rest, thanks to Mark Farmer. A good time had by all. Next school
year we will be creating an exchange website that anybody can visit if interested! Josh Risley (874
