Do you want A HEALTHY CAMP MEEKER?
A Call to Action!
Our community needs your help. For the past many months, the energies of the Camp Meeker Rec and Park Board and many citizens have been caught up in a controversy surrounding the installation of a cell tower in town. Some of our neighbors feel the proposed Verizon cell tower is needed to solve some of our problems. Other neighbors feel that the cell tower would cause more and possibly worse problems. People have been working hard to be respectful in hearing what each side is saying, but at times it seems as if we were speaking different languages.
Citizens for a Healthy Camp Meeker are calling together all members of our community to look into the problems we face and come to an understanding that together we can find solutions.
Our dedicated CM Volunteer Fire Department has important concerns about the emergency communication system in areas here in town and along the adjacent Bohemian Highway corridor, particularly concerned should we face a significant disaster, they believe improved cell service would help address this issue. Some people are interested in the revenue the tower would provide.
Other concerned members of our community point to emerging science that indicates that exposure to microwaves in the concentration coming from cell towers is harmful to human health and the environment. And they say that the cell tower would not solve our emergency communication needs adequately. They are forming a citizens advisory committee to search for a “prudent siting” alternative, and others are researching communication issues.
Camp Meeker Community Builders (CMCB) believes that we can solve our problems if we join together to resolve them. CMCB sees both “sides” of the cell tower issue as citizens who are motivated by the vision of a healthy Camp Meeker. Surely we can work out our problems in a way that respects everyone’s perspective.
Communication and funding are not the only problems we face. We need a preparedness and evacuation plan should we face a disaster. We can continue our partnership with Fire Safe Sonoma to deal with our hillsides that are covered with dead tan oaks, creating danger from fire and from falling. Our big trees – particularly our Doug firs – are getting larger and more vulnerable to extreme winds such as we experienced last winter. We can find alternatives to the town’s funding needs. We can repair deteriorating trails and help restore Dutch Bill Creek. There is lots to do and many hands can make the work easy.
Come to the Rec and Park Board meetings at Anderson Hall to signal to those currently divided that there are enough Camp Meeker residents ready to find common ground amidst the divide, that we can face our problems as a community united.
